images are everywhere - images designed to sell or convert.
Images designed to get inside our heads and to influence
us to buy or be something else (and the "being"
usually involves "buying").
One of the aspects of creating magazine image-based collage
that most appeals to me is the subverting of the image's
original intent by taking it out of context and, by combining
it with other images, to create startling and dream-like
landscapes, whose only purpose is to amuse, delight and
intrigue the viewer.
The original works measure 14" x 18" and consist
of meticulously cut out images affixed to a painted background
using a spray cement and then varnished. The spray cement
goes on much dryer and prevents the buckling of the paper,
thereby allowing me to create a very flat finished collage
resembling a painting or a photograph.
