#34 in the Meet the Artists Who Have Inspired Us to Part with Our Cash series is Judy Gelles. We discovered Judy Gelles and her work during a Philadelphia Open Studio tour she was part of a few years ago. I was most attracted by this piece and the use of intense color against a background devoid of color.

Her website states “Having long been caught in the nexus of feminism, motherhood, finding a career and developing as an artist, Judy Gelles has undertaken a determined and obsessive thirty year exploration on these issues, providing social commentary on who we are and how we think in this socially organized world.”
Judy work is being featured in a group show through the end of February, 2009 at Pentimenti Gallery in Philadelphia. 145 N Second Street. The gallery is open Wednesday thru Saturday.
You can also view more of work at www.judygelles.com. She may be contacted at judy@judygelles.com

#33 in the Meet the Artists Who Have Inspired Us to Part with Our Cash series is Betsy’s aunt, Eileen Feigenbaum. Although Eileen, now in her eighties, no longer paints (the pieces we own were painted circa 1945-55), she contines to inspire Betsy with her energy and love of beauty.
Eileen is a long-time resident of New York City, but makes frequent trips to Philly to visit with her sister and her niece.

#32 in the Meet the Artists Who Have Inspired Us to Part with Our Cash series is Diana Riukas. We first became familiar with Diana’s work at an exhibition titled "Mixed Bag" at the Salon Des Amis in Malvern, PA in 2004. The work we own is an encaustic painting on two panels. Diana has an upcoming show at the Plastic Club in Philadelphia, PA titled "Neurotica." It is a solo show of her recent mixed media paintings. See details below:

#30 in the Meet the Artists Who Have Inspired Us to Part with Our Cash series is Gillian Pokalo. We first encountered Gillian’s work at a show at Ten Stone Bar & Restaurant. Fellow artist and friend Chiara curates the shows and has introduced a number of very interesting and wonderful new artists to Betsy and me over the last few years. Gillian is one of them.
About her work, she writes: "My work is influenced by the sociological shift in the communities that originally were built around industry and the remnants of places that no longer exist. There is something hauntingly beautiful in the textures of an abandoned, derelict building, which evoke memories and pose questions about past inhabitants and present conditions. I employ traditional and non-traditional printmaking techniques, including photography, silk screen, and gum bichromate. The process of making a print intrigues me because it is that which remains when the plate or screen is removed. In this way, I think of the creative process as a reflection on the transience and impermanence of life."

#30 in the Meet the Artists Who Have Inspired Us to Part with Our Cash series is Patricia Hillman. We bought this piece from the Bikeworks show a few years back. It is an annual event to raise money for the Bikeworks Project. Betsy and I have both donated work in the past. All work must incorporate bike parts. This piece by Patricia uses a derailleur. I tried in vain to find a website that would feature more of her work. She creates really wonderful assemblages, so it’s sad that I can’t at this time direct you somewhere to view more. #29 in the Meet the Artists Who Have Inspired Us to Part with Our Cash series is Francine Strauss. Of her art, she writes, "I began creating art later in my life. The act of creating takes me to some other place within. A journey of sorts to places that, for me, are both strange and full of wonder.
My work is about dreams and nightmares, fears and joys. It is about memory and those things we wish to remember, but have no way of knowing how to remember. It is about everything we will never be able to understand, but wish to."
Francine’s Totem Dolls remind me of ritual artifacts discovered in some far off land. They seem imbued with a mysterious power and presence that I find utterly delightful. Click thumbnail to view larger image.

#28 in the Meet the Artists Who Have Inspired Us to Part with Our Cash series is Michael Guinn. According to Michael’s website, he…has been living in Philadelphia since 1951. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Samuel Fleisher Art Memorial. He graduated from the Philadelphia College of Art, now the University of the Arts, in 1966. After two years of independent study in Italy he returned to Philadelphia where he now lives. For the past thirty years he has been painting and drawing, and he has shown his works in Philadelphia, New York, Massachusetts, Texas, and Paros, Greece.
About art, he writes, "Like an ordinary radio which converts signals we can’t hear into sound we can hear, art in any of its many forms concentrates peculiar feelings of which we are vaguely aware. The "buzz," the "art experience," is the result of that concentration. When things are right in a work of art, the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts, and the work emits these signals, bringing us close to it, to each other, and to whatever is resonant in all existence."
According to Betsy and me, Michael is a friend whom – along wiht his wife, Cynthia Arkin – we’ve know for a number of years now, and whose work we both appreciate and enjoy immensely. They also do a great holiday card every year. You can see more of Michael’s work on his website at: http://michaelguinn.home.att.net/

#27 in the Meet the Artists Who Have Inspired Us to Part with Our Cash series is watercolorist Terry Hazard. This beautiful painting is quite large and nearly impossible to photograph because of the glass and the inevitable reflections. This is the best shot of it I could get. It doesn’t do the painting justice, but I hope you at least get an idea of the piece. I was unable to find a website for Ms. Hazard, which is unfortunate.

#26 in the Meet the Artists Who Have Inspired Us to Part with Our Cash series is Dan Gorman. Although Dan works mostly in oils and watercolors in a painterly-realistic style, he also experiments with found-object assemblages. It is one such assemblage that caught our eye while visiting the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts in Reading, PA where Dan maintains a studio. The piece we own is from his Alien Greeting Box series. (Click thumbnail to view larger image.)
Dan says, "For me, Art is about sharing an experience, sensation, or observation that has demanded my attention. The challenge then becomes to create a similar reaction, in the viewer, that touches them in some way."
